The Law of Attraction and Quantum Physics: What Science Actually Says

Search for manifestation and you will quickly find quantum physics invoked as its scientific basis: the observer effect, the field of infinite possibility, the idea that thoughts are vibrations that collapse reality. It is worth taking the question seriously rather than dismissing it, because the honest answer is more interesting than either the sales pitch or the eye roll. Here is what the physics says, what it does not say, and what remains genuinely open.
The claim, stated fairly
The popular argument runs roughly like this. Quantum physics shows that particles exist as probabilities until observed. Observation collapses those possibilities into one reality. Consciousness is doing the observing. Therefore focused thought selects which reality becomes actual, and by holding a belief consistently you shift outcomes in your favour.
Every step in that chain contains a real piece of physics. The chain as a whole does not hold, and the reason it fails is specific rather than vague.
Where the physics is quoted correctly
- Superposition is real. Before measurement, a quantum system genuinely has no single definite value for certain properties, and the possibilities interfere in ways that show up in data.
- Measurement genuinely changes the situation. What can be said about a system after a measurement differs from what could be said before it.
- Nonlocality is real and experimentally confirmed. Entangled particles show correlations no local classical model can reproduce, work recognised by the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics.
- Separateness is not fundamental in the way intuition suggests. The mathematics describes one joint state, not a collection of independent things.
Where the argument breaks
Observer does not mean a person
This is the load bearing error. In quantum physics, an observation is any irreversible interaction that records information in the environment: a photon striking a detector, a molecule of air hitting a mirror, a mark on a photographic plate in a sealed lab. Experiments run overnight with nobody in the building and produce the same results. Nothing in the formalism refers to awareness, intention or belief.
Quantum probabilities are strict, not open
The phrase field of infinite possibility suggests anything can happen. Quantum mechanics says the opposite. Probabilities are calculated to many decimal places and confirmed to the same precision. It is the most quantitatively constrained theory we have, which is exactly why lasers and MRI scanners work.
Scale matters, and it matters enormously
Quantum effects on a rent payment or a job offer are suppressed by decoherence to a degree that has no practical meaning. Warm, wet, macroscopic systems lose quantum coherence in fractions of a nanosecond. There is no known mechanism by which a thought steers a superposition of life events.
Thoughts are not vibrations in the physics sense
Frequency in physics has units and a measurable value. Thoughts do involve electrochemical activity with rhythms that an EEG can record, but these are not the frequencies of a quantum field, and no experiment shows them shifting external events. Using one word for two different things is where the argument gets its apparent power.
What is actually going on when manifestation appears to work
People often report real results, and dismissing that is as unscientific as overselling it. There are well documented mechanisms, none of which require quantum physics.
- Attention shapes what you notice and act on. Holding a clear goal changes which opportunities you register and which you walk past.
- Expectation changes behaviour. Believing an outcome is achievable measurably changes persistence, risk taking and how you present yourself to others.
- Written and specific goals outperform vague intentions in decades of behavioural research, largely because they translate into concrete next actions.
- Placebo and expectancy effects on subjective states such as pain and mood are real and measurable, though they are effects on the person, not on the world.
- Selection and memory bias. Hits are remembered and shared, misses are quietly forgotten, which makes any practice look more effective than the record supports.
That is a modest but genuine account: belief changes the believer, and a changed person changes their circumstances. No collapse of the wave function required.
What David Bohm actually said, and why he is so often misquoted
Bohm is regularly recruited into manifestation literature, usually through the line that consciousness and matter are not fundamentally separate. He did hold a version of that view, and it is worth stating precisely, because the precise version is more radical and less transactional than the paraphrase.

Bohm's proposal was that thought and matter both unfold from a deeper implicate order, one undivided ground. But he was consistently critical of using physics to underwrite personal desire. His practical work went the other way entirely: into dialogue, into examining how thought fragments the world and how a group might see its own assumptions together. He was interested in freeing attention from conditioning, not in aiming it at outcomes.
Questions that remain genuinely open
Being honest about the failures of the popular argument does not mean the underlying territory is settled.
- The measurement problem is unresolved. Physics has no agreed account of how possibility becomes a single fact.
- The hard problem of consciousness is unresolved. We cannot yet explain why physical processes are accompanied by experience at all.
- Whether quantum processes play any functional role in the brain remains contested rather than closed, with proposals such as orchestrated objective reduction still under test.
- Whether reality is fundamentally one, as Bohm argued, is a live philosophical question that physics constrains but does not settle.
The interesting position is the middle one. Quantum physics does not authorise the law of attraction. It also does not deliver a universe of separate billiard balls in which mind is an accident. It leaves us with a world that is deeply interconnected and not yet understood, which is a better starting point for inquiry than either certainty offers.
Common questions
Does quantum physics prove the law of attraction?
No. The argument depends on reading observer as conscious observer, which is not what the term means in physics, and on ignoring decoherence at everyday scales.
Do thoughts create reality?
Thoughts shape perception, attention and behaviour, which change your life in real ways. There is no evidence they alter physical events directly at a distance.
Is manifestation therefore useless?
Not at all, if you are honest about the mechanism. Clarity of intention, written goals and self belief have measurable behavioural effects. What fails is the physics story attached to them.
What should I read if I want the serious version?
Start with Bohm's Wholeness and the Implicate Order and On Dialogue, then look at the philosophy of mind literature on the hard problem. The serious material is harder and considerably more rewarding than the marketing.
