David Bohm Books: A Complete Reading List and Where to Start

David Bohm wrote for two very different audiences. Some of his books are working physics texts used in graduate courses. Others are quiet philosophical works read by people who have never touched a wave equation. If you have heard his name and want to read him properly, the hard part is knowing which door to walk through first. This guide maps his major books, explains what each one actually does, and suggests a reading order depending on where you are starting from.
Start here if you are new to Bohm
For most readers the entry point is Wholeness and the Implicate Order, published in 1980. It is the book where Bohm sets out his central claim that the universe we perceive, the explicate order, unfolds from a deeper enfolded ground he called the implicate order. It is philosophical rather than technical, and it contains his clearest statement of why he believed fragmentation in thought produces fragmentation in the world.
If even that feels dense, begin with On Dialogue, a short and very readable collection drawn from his later talks. It carries the same worldview but arrives through conversation rather than physics.
Wholeness and the Implicate Order (1980)
His best known and most influential book. Bohm argues that the habit of dividing reality into separate parts is a feature of our thinking rather than of the world, and proposes the implicate order as a way of describing a universe that is one unbroken movement. The chapters on language, on the holomovement, and on consciousness as an aspect of that movement are the ones most often quoted.
Who it suits
Readers who want the core idea in Bohm's own words and are willing to read slowly. No mathematics is required, though some passages assume you have met quantum mechanics as a concept.
On Dialogue (1996)
Assembled after his death from talks and seminars, this is Bohm's account of dialogue as a discipline rather than a technique. He describes how a group can suspend its assumptions and think together, and why he believed this was the practical response to the fragmentation he diagnosed in physics and society alike. It is the most immediately usable of his books.
Thought as a System (1992)
Based on a seminar Bohm gave in Ojai, this book treats thought itself as a physical process with its own momentum, one that produces problems and then hides its own role in producing them. It overlaps with On Dialogue but goes deeper into the mechanics of how thought defends itself.
Science, Order, and Creativity (1987)
Written with F. David Peat, this book examines how science actually advances, why creative insight matters more than accumulated technique, and how the scientific culture of the twentieth century became narrower than the questions it faced. It is the most accessible bridge between Bohm's physics and his cultural criticism.
The Undivided Universe (1993)
Written with Basil Hiley, this is the technical statement of the ontological interpretation of quantum theory, the pilot wave picture in which particles have definite positions guided by a quantum potential. It is a genuine physics monograph with full mathematics. Read it only if you have the background, or read our pilot wave guide for the argument without the equations.
Quantum Theory (1951)
Bohm's early textbook, written while he was still working within the standard interpretation, and admired by Einstein. It remains a respected teaching text. It is historically important because writing it convinced Bohm that the orthodox account was incomplete, which led directly to his 1952 hidden variables papers.
Causality and Chance in Modern Physics (1957)
A compact philosophical defence of the idea that chance in physics reflects deeper levels of order we have not yet reached, rather than a final randomness at the base of nature. It is the clearest short statement of the conviction that drove the rest of his career.
The Limits of Thought and other dialogues with Krishnamurti
Bohm's long conversations with Jiddu Krishnamurti are published in several volumes, including The Ending of Time, The Limits of Thought, and The Future of Humanity. They are transcripts rather than arguments, and they show Bohm working at the edge of what he could formalise. Readers usually either find them the most valuable material he left behind or the most frustrating.

Books about Bohm
F. David Peat's biography Infinite Potential: The Life and Times of David Bohm is the standard account of his life, including the McCarthy era exile that pushed him from Princeton to Brazil, Israel and finally London. Basil Hiley's papers are the best route into the technical afterlife of his physics.
Where the films fit
Reading Bohm is demanding partly because he was arguing against the grain of his own discipline, and the context is easy to lose.
