Have you been Plurked today!

I came across this Quote of the Day at Click Z

I knew what twitter was but I never heard of Plurk. So off I go to plurk.com to see what it is all about.

Just like Twitter you can send messages up to 140 characters to your fans (followers on twitter). Fans follow your “time line” and can be added to your friends network. You can send messages to different “cliques” (groups of friends), a feature not yet available on twitter. You can earn Karma points on your activity as well as your friend’s.

Every plurker has his/her own karma value. It is recalculated every day and falls within these intervals:

0.00 to 21.00: You are in the state of creation
21.00 to 41.00: You are in the state of maintenance
41.00 to 61.00: You are enlightened
61.00 to 81.00: You are so close to Plurk Nirvana
81.00 to 100.00: You have reached Plurk Nirvana!

Your karma score is directly influenced by you and your friends Plurk activity. The more active you are, the more points you’ll get. Using various features of Plurk such as instant messaging or uploading a profile image will also help.

High karma gives you access to exclusive emoticons such as those used in chat rooms.

And finally, you can send video and picture links. When you have been plurked you we see a thumbnail of the video or image.

So the question is, why would you use micro-blooging tools like twitter and plurk. For many is is just another social networking tool that can be fun. For business networking it is a quick way to keep your team up to date. For others it is a way to hear breaking news first.

For some it is just more noise.
